South Africa’s leading media company is the first Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer installation for SAP Database workloads in EMEA.

Media24 is South Africa’s leading media company with interests in digital media and services, newspapers, magazines, ecommerce, book publishing, print and distribution. It is part of Naspers, a multinational group of media and ecommerce platforms.

Media24 runs its SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Databases on Oracle Exadata as the underlying database system. The company’s Oracle Exadata X2 machines, were approaching end of life. The company began looking for a hardware refresh and at the same time, Media24 wanted the flexibility of a cloud solution.

Media24 opted for Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer because of its success with its previous on-premises Oracle Exadata solution. Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer brings the desired performance gains, eliminates hardware refresh spending, and reduces operating expenses and administration through the on-demand consumption of CPU capacity.

As the first company in EMEA to run SAP Database workloads entirely on Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer,  Media24 immediately noticed faster SAP business operations with significant performance gains on the amount of processing required. Exadata X8M takes advantage of persistent memory and RDMA over converge ethernet, which lowers IO latency. Dynamic scaling also reduced compute resources by scaling up environments as and when required.

Having the high-performance Exadata systems on-premises allows Media24 to comply with South African data sovereignty laws, which require data to remain in the country. Oracle provides the benefits of cloud automation and scalability while giving Media24 total control over the critical information it handles.  Media 24 no longer needs to outlay capital expenditure for server refreshes. Instead, the company pays only for capacity consumed, in an operating expenses model.
